What mediums can I use to thin oil paint?
Linseed oil, walnut oil, and solvent-based thinners like turpentine or mineral spirits can thin oil paint and adjust drying times.
How long does it take for oil paint to dry?
Oil paints dry slowly, typically taking days to weeks depending on the thickness, colors, and whether you've used any mediums. Some layers may remain tacky for a while.
How can I avoid cracking in oil paintings?
Follow the "fat over lean" rule—use lean layers with less oil initially and progressively increase the oil content in each subsequent layer to prevent cracking
Can I paint oils over acrylics?
Yes, you can paint oil over acrylic, but never paint acrylic over oil. Acrylics dry quickly and provide a good underpainting, but oils are more flexible as they dry.
What is the Zorn Palette in oil painting?
The Zorn Palette, used by Anders Zorn, consists of only four colors: yellow ochre, cadmium red, ivory black, and white. It simplifies color mixing and creates harmonious, muted tones.
